Faro Fractal

For this section, we welcome manuscripts that conform to the criteria set by the editorial board, from the Social Sciences standpoint. Scholarly manuscripts should focus on the analysis and debate of the most relevant contemporary issues and experiences as seen from the complex and multidisciplinary perspectives required by the systematic study of Social Participation in the construction of the Communication and Knowledge Society, with a special emphasis on the Latin American context.

Book reviews

A book review is not a summary of the book and neither is it an essay that collects verbatim material from chapters of the book. It is rather a methodical analysis of the work and must include a commentary of the content, a discussion of the arguments raised by the author in the book, and an analysis of the conclusions that highlight the contribution of the book to the field of study.

In a way, a book review allows to “see through” the contents of the work. Normally a book review follows these guidelines:

  • Identification of the work. It must include full bibliographic information about the book under review. The following details must be included in the header section of the review: Author’s full name, full Title of the work under review, Publisher, Year and Place of Publication, number of pages, IBN, indicate if it is a new or a reprinted edition, if the work has been previously known, and, if it is a new edition indicate which changes have been made compared to previous editions.
  • Introduction. The introduction of the review should include an exposition of the contribution and significance of the work for the current thinking on the subject. It must also include some indication of the personality of the author as a researcher, his/her contributions to the field, where she/he stands in the field of inquiry, theoretical orientations that he/she may subscribe to (if he/she is a poststructuralist theorist for instance) or might have advocated for in the past as well as any other detail that might be helpful to understand the author’s point of view.
  • Book contents. the review must provide a description of how the book is organized; references to how sources of information were handled, bibliography that was referenced, the kinds of materials the work presents (graphics, glossaries, appendices, graphs, tables), quality of the edition, and ease and comfort for consultation.
  • Analysis and Evaluation: the review must present the main arguments or thesis that the author defends; the originality and current relevance of the work, an analysis of the evidence(s) that support the main thesis, the relevance of the work for scientific, educational, or informative purposes, the conclusions the author arrives at in his/her work, and the contribution and relevance of the work for the subject.
  • Personal comments: critical appraisals should focus on the relevance of the arguments that support the author’s main thesis of the work under review; the controversies that it has raised since its publication, it should inform the reader of other researchers’ theoretical stances that support or challenge the main thesis of the author; how significant those stances are and if they modify, change or sustain current thinking on the subject.
  • Conclusions: the review must highlight the importance of the work through a panoramic or critical evaluation of where the work stands in relation to the field of inquiry. For that purpose, the review must be written using a descriptive-narrative style.
